1. Indian Farmer Should Adopt Natural Farming Methods: PM Modi

On 16 December Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that farmers should adopt natural farming. The awareness about this should be spread and it should be transformed into a Jan Andolan (people’s movement). PM Modi said that farmers should practice ancient traditions of natural farming. This will help 80 per cent of small farmers in India who own less than two hectares of land. While addressing the national conclave on Agro and Food Processing, PM also suggested that all the state governments should join this sustainable and eco-friendly revolution. Read more here.

2. More than half of FPOs in India are viable and efficient: SFAC, MD

Addressing a national workshop, the Managing Director of Small Farmers Agri-business Consortium’s (SFAC) Neelkamal Darbari said that more than 50 per cent Farmers’ Producer Organisation (FPOs) promoted by SFAC are efficient and have the potential to grow. These are registered under various government programs. They just need the right ecosystem support and adequate infusion of investment in agri-infrastructure through banks and NBFCs. This will be a real game-changer for them and will help in gradually increasing the income of member farmers. Read more here.

3. Agriculture Budget Increased From ₹21,000 Crore To ₹1,23,000 Crore: Central Government

During the question-answer round on 14 December, Minister of States for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Kailash Chaudhary said that the central government has increased the agriculture budget from roughly Rs 21,000 crore to Rs 1,23,000 crore. The minister also said that the government has rewarded farmers under the crop diversification scheme. Similar rewards are also being given to farmers practising horticulture. He also mentioned that the government has also increased the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for many crops. Read more here.

4. ‘Innovation and Agri-Entrepreneurship Development’ Initiative To Promote Start-Ups In The Agriculture Sector

Under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY-RAFTAAR), the agriculture ministry has taken the ‘Innovation and Agri-Entrepreneurship Development’ initiative to promote startups in the agriculture sector. The goal is to boost the usage of technology in the sector while promoting innovation and agri-entrepreneurship. Financial assistance and the fostering of the incubation ecosystem will also be provided by the ministry. The Ministry has also designated 5 Knowledge Partners as Centers of Excellence and 24 RKVY-RAFTAAR Agribusiness Incubators. Almost 646 start-ups in agriculture have received money under the initiated totalling Rs. 69.92 crore. Read more here.

5. MoU Between Andhra Govt, FAO And ICAR To Boost Sustainable Farming In State

The Andhra Pradesh government signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) to help farmers adopt sustainable cultivation. This step will help in strengthening the condition of farmers in the state. State Agriculture Minister Kurasala Kannababu said that the government trying to convince farmers to grow alternative crops and not just paddy. For this, the Rythu Bharosa Kendras will be improved with the assistance of FAO and ICAR. These are one-stop procurement centres for seeds, fertilisers, etc. Read more here.

6. 1.54 Lakh Farmer Adopted Natural Farming In Past 4 Years: Himachal CM

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur has said that in the past four years, around 1.54 lakh farmer families have adopted natural farming in the state. With this, out of the target area of 12,000 hectares, 9,200 hectares has been brought under natural farming. The Chief Minister said that in 2018’s budget, the government launched Prakritik Kheti Khushal Kisan Yojana aimed to promote natural farming with a provision of Rs 25 crore. Read more here.

7. A Panel On MSP Expected Soon, Says Agriculture Secretary

On 13th December, Agriculture Secretary Sanjay Agrawal said that a committee to decide on matters such as promotion of zero budgeting farming and making the minimum support price will be constituted soon. Responding to a query he said this will be formed in the “very near future” but did not mention the exact timeline. He also said that a government order on this will follow soon. Read more here.

8. Unique ID For Farmers Soon: Agricultural Minster Tomar

In a written reply submitted to the Parliament, the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar has said that GoI is in process of making unique ID of farmers across India. This ID will help the government to link a farmer profile with all the agricultural schemes, which have been availed by the farmer. As per the updated database till 09.12.2021, the government has information of 11.64 Crores farmers. Read more here.

9. First Bio-Fertilizer Factory Inaugurated In Shillong

Meghalaya’s Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh inaugurated a bio-fertilizer production unit, which is the first of its kind. He said that this will be the turning point for the state and this will help in making Meghalaya an organic state. He also encouraged youth and entrepreneurs to take this opportunity and work to establish similar units across the state. Read more here.
