Agriculture sector is widely dependent on Storage and Warehouse facilities. They are an important part of the supply chain. The role of storage and warehouse facilities is to hold and preserve goods from the time they are produced until they are needed for consumption.
The storage of goods ensures the continuous flow of goods in the market. Storage facilities also protect the quality of goods depending upon their perishable or semi-perishable nature.
There are several goods that have seasonal demand. To meet such demands, continuous production and storage become necessary. Storage also helps in stabilizing the prices as per demand and supply. Storage and warehouse facilities also provide employment to many and is a source of income to people running these places.
There are 2 types of Storage Systems:
Underground Storage Structures and Surface storage structures.
Underground Storage Structures
Underground storage structures are like dugout structures which are well constructed from sides to sides and plastered with cow dung. They are also plastered with stones or sand and cement. They are generally made circular or rectangular in shape. The capacity of these storage centres depends upon the size of the structure. These structures are safe from threats from theft, rain or wind. This space can also be temporarily utilized for some other purposes with minor adjustments.
Surface storage structures
As derived from the name, surface storage structures are on the surface or ground. Here the food grains are kept in a ground surface structure in two ways – bag storage or bulk storage.
1. Bag storage
Under this facility, the goods are kept in bags of a particular quantity. Later, these can be easily bought, sold or dispatched. These bags are easy to load or unload. Goods are kept in separate lots with identification marks on the bags. In case any bag is identified as infested, it can easily be removed. Also, the problem of the sweating of grains does not arise because the bags are exposed to the atmosphere.
2. Bulk or loose storage
Under this facility, the exposed peripheral surface area per unit weight of grain is less. Hence, the chances of damage from external sources are very less.
The government of India has made many efforts to promote and improve the storage facilities at the farm level. Similarly, we need solutions for inventory management, bill generation and keeping a track of payments. Manually monitoring these things with book-keeping is not easy. Understanding these concerns and turning this into an opportunity to be a helpful hand in the new-age supply chain, Bijak which is India’s Number 1 Agritrading Startup came up with a solution called ChargeERP.
