Sikhism was founded by Guru Nanak Dev Ji. He was born on Kartik Poornima which is the fifteenth lunar day of Kartik month. In India and in different parts of the world, Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated with great enthusiasm. This day is also known as ‘Prakash Parv’
He was born in a Hindu family on 15 April 1469 at Talwandi, situated on the Ravi River. With time, this place was renamed ‘Nankana Sahib’. Currently, it is a district in the Punjab province of Pakistan. His father’s name was Kalian Chand aka Mehta Kalu and his mother’s name was Tripti Devi. At the age of 16, Nanak Dev Ji married Sulakhni. Guru Nanak ji had two sons, Shri Chand and Lakhmi Chand.
Guru Nanak ji had four disciples. They were Mardana, Lahna, Bala, and Ramdas. Guru Nanak Ji travelled everywhere with these 4 disciples only. Guru Nanak ji was very intelligent and also a social reformer, poet, yogi and patriot. His thoughts brought a difference to society.
It is believed that Guru Nanak Dev ji addressed Bharat as ‘Hindustan’ for the first time. In 1526, when Mughal Ruler Babar attacked India. It is at that time Nanak Dev Ji used ‘Hindustan‘.
खुरासान खसमाना कीआ,
हिंदुस्तान डराईआ।
There is a teaching in everything we read or listen to about Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Similarly, there is an incident when Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s father gave him ₹20 to go to market and told him to do a ‘Khara Sauda’ or ‘True Trade’. He saw some hungry sadhus over there. With the money Guru Nanak Ji had, he fed the hungry sadhus. He went back home, told him the entire thing and said he did a ‘Khara Sauda’.
There are countless unique stories with a lesson behind them on how to live a life better way.
On 19 November 2021, we will celebrate 552nd Prakash Parv. On the eve of Guruparv, let’s remember his 3 key teachings
