History of Diwali

According to Hindu mythology, Diwali is the day when Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya with his wife and brother after completing his exile of fourteen years. The people of Ayodhya celebrated their return by lighting up the way to their home with Diyas. Hence, the festival symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.

Another popular belief about Diwali is that Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the cosmic ocean during ‘Samudra Manthan’ i.e. the churning of the ocean in Satyuga. It is believed that she came out with a pot of gold. Hence, Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped as the deity of wealth and prosperity during Diwali.

Diwali and Farming

Diwali also coincides with the harvest season in India. In fact, in ancient India, Diwali was mainly celebrated by farmers as a harvest festival as crops are harvested between October and November only. India is an agricultural society where people would seek the divine blessings of Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth. On this day, all businesses are closed and prayers are offered to Lord Lakshmi to bring wealth and good luck to them.
